I started this site to learn more about the idea of Urban Farming and Sustainable Living. Hopefully, this will be a good medium for like minded people to connect and share insights on the subject. With your help we can make this grow into a great tool and resource to help others spread the word! If you have any suggestions on how the site can better please don't hesitate to let me know. -Mike
Here are some pics of how the plants are doing now. I'm wondering if i'll fruit of them this year before November?? who knows, i'll find out! Read more...
Can't wait to try the first tomatoes of the year! Plants are looking great and i'm doing all I can to not pick them early. I've started to see leaved being eaten by bugs and im going to have to figure something out. I havent used chemicals in the past, but im open to ideas. Last summer my plants were torn apart and I was getting tomoatoes past mid august... Read more...
I finally got around to inoculating and sealing the dowels with wax. There's a chance I could receive a late fall harvest, but more than likely they won't cap until next spring. This wasn't the easiest of gardening projects to get going, but it's easy from here on out. They should produce a few pounds per year for 3-5 years. I plan to add a few more logs to the stack each year. Read more...
I'm right on the edge of zones for these, but im gonna give it a try. I got 4 little 'Ice Cream' variety banana plants. Very yummy! I lined the inside perimeter of the planter with mulch to act as insulation. I will also wrap the outside of the planter with buble wrap and burlap in the late fall. The bottom of the planter is not lined and the plants should go down into the ground. Hopefully they will come back up next spring! Read more...
I haven't started yet, but I have everything ready to go. The plugs came with awesome instructions. Shiitake is oak in Japanese so I used oak, but I think any hardwood can be used. I need to get moving on it though since the logs can't dry out too long without being inoculated. Hopefully this weekend. I'll post pics. Read more...
Welcome the site! I like how everyone seems to be into chickens. That's my project for this coming winter/spring. Need to gather a plan together. Read more...
Chicken Coop build is my 2011 winter project to raise chicken for the following spring. Sounds like i'll need to do some research on the right kind of coop for my area. I like the tractor idea. Did you have plans or just build from an idea? Read more...
Never considered larger plants or trees, great idea! Mobility is an added benefit in my case. This year I will move the tomatoes around to follow the optimal sun exposure. I have big oak tress that kill productivity in that latter part of the season. Not this year! I used a pallet to build this box yesterday afternoon. Not as appealing as I'd dreamed, but at least the industrial waste sticker isnt visible... I can simply pick it up and move it with the drum too. Read more...
I ordered 300 shiitake plugs off ebay today. I have about a dozen 3-4' logs that are 8-10" in diameter. The logs were freshly cut last week. This is the first time I've done this and looking forward to a large crop next year! I'll post pics of the process when I get the plugs and start the work. Anyone else ever done this? Read more...
My soil is low pH and growing in the ground doesn't produce good tasting veggies at all. Last year I cut down 55 gallon drums to plant in and what a world of difference! I was very pleased with both quality and production. I used a sawzall to cut the drums in half and made handles out of old rope I found. Not so pleasing to the eye, but I have a plan for that. I'm going to build decorative boxes out of recycled pallets to place them in. Still collecting pallets. Here are some current pics of the drums. Next week i'll pull out the weeds and start planting. Very excited about the spring! Read more...
